All gasoline-powered cars, hybrids, and alternative-fuel vehicles that are model-year 1976 and newer require a Smog Check by the DMV once every 2 years, with the following exceptions:
For example: a 2020 model-year car will first be required to a Smog Check once every 2 years starting in 2028 (2020 + 8 = 2028). This same car will require a change-of-ownership Smog Check if sold in or after 2024 (2020 + 4 = 2024).
If your diesel-powered vehicle is 1998 and newer with a gross weight rating of 14,000 pounds and less, it will require a Smog Check once every 2 years. There are no model year exceptions for diesel-powered vehicles.
No appointment is necessary at our smog check station. Please come by anytime during our regular business hours.
Most out of state cars seeking registration in CA will need a Smog Check.
A car may fail smog for various reasons (e.g., dirty air filter, leaky gas cap, defective ignition or EVAP system, catalytic converter malfunction, etc.). If your car fails smog, you are required to do the necessary repairs before you can renew your CA DMV registration or sell your vehicle. As a test only station, we do not offer any repairs but we do offer a free retest within 30 days of your initial test.
In CA, the seller is responsible for having a Smog Check performed on the car and providing the evidence to the buyer.
